"My number one priority is to do what's right for the American people, for jobs, and for economic growth," said President Obama during a press conference this afternoon on the middle class tax cuts and unemployment insurance agreement.

The agreement secures vital tax relief and investments in our workers that will create jobs and accelerate economic growth. The plan has three key accomplishments:

* Working families will not lose their tax cut: A typical working family faced a tax increase of over $3,000 on January 1st. That's avoided under this framework agreement, and working families won't see their tax cuts go away next year.
* Focused on high impact job creation measures: The framework agreement includes some of the best measures for jumpstarting growth and job creation, including a full year of emergency unemployment insurance benefits, an about $120 billion payroll tax cut for working families and a continuation of tax credits for working families. This is on top of growth generated by extension of the middle-class income tax rates.
* Does not worsen the medium- and long-term deficit. These are responsible, temporary measures to support our economy that will not add costs by the middle of the decade. The President does not believe it is affordable to make the high-income tax cuts permanent and will continue to have that debate in the years ahead.

Q Mr. President, what do you say to Democrats who say you’re rewarding Republican obstruction here? You yourself used in your opening statement they were unwilling to budge on this. A lot of progressive Democrats are saying they’re unwilling to budge, and you’re asking them to get off the fence and budge. Why should they be rewarding Republican obstruction?

THE PRESIDENT: Well, let me use a couple of analogies. I’ve said before that I felt that the middle-class tax cuts were being held hostage to the high-end tax cuts. I think it’s tempting not to negotiate with hostage-takers, unless the hostage gets harmed. Then people will question the wisdom of that strategy. In this case, the hostage was the American people and I was not willing to see them get harmed.

The President had no choice. It was agree to an extension or people lose tax credits and unemployment insurance.

I would have made the same decision.

He handled this with his usual intellegence. He did fight in away by keeping to bring up the GOP opposed the tax cut for the wealthy, therefore holding middle class Americans and the unemployed hostage. I wanted a fight but, as he says it would be at the cost of 2 million Americans suffering. I am tired of seeing my American brothers and sisters suffering. We have to keep letting the GOP tighten their noose for 2012. One question is will he be in office in two years when this comes up for revote? Will he buckle then? Will there be job growth in the next two years and growth in the economy now that the GOP's wealthy have their tax break or will they continue to hoard? I am sure the answer is no. The only growth will come from small businesses.

From Calculated Risk:

Just to be clear, the "extension of the unemployment benefits" is an extension of the qualifying dates for the various tiers of benefits, and not additional weeks of benefits. There is no additional help for the so-called "99ers".

I am a member of the middle class (lower) and I would be willing to pay more taxes if the wealthy had to pay more taxes. He should have held his ground and used it as leverage to redo the whole tax system: low flat rate income tax with no deductions and VAT on everything we purchase. It won't happen, but it should.

Keven and Radio, Do YOU really think the gop will hold up to their agreement. Currently I have NO unemployment though I remain hopeful BUT I was willing to make that sacrifice to keep the gop from making economic slaves of us. Obama just handed us over to them without a fight and HELL YEA. I RESENT IT DEEPLY! Even at Christmas time!

Max 3PO==Rixar13========Folks come on this isn't the end of the world. All Obama did was to stop the fighting in Congress and leave the tax rates as they are. No one will pay more, many will pay less and the unemployed get another break. This post looks like you'll want to jump on your fearless leader. Obama finally did something right for a change, rejoice and be happy you didn't have to pay more taxes. It only for 2 years. We have been blessed that we didn't have to pay for these taxes for the past 10 years, thanks to President Bush. That's right you'll don't like that guy. It would have cost your family another $3,000.00 a year, as explained by Obama himself.

Given that, how can anything that the Republicans want be good for America and Americans.

He gives up 2 more years of tax income that we need to help rid us of our deficit (yeah, he should have let them all expire), for only one year of extended unemployment, oh and some more cuts in there as well. And all of it will be added to our deficit (and don't think that won't be a poking stick for the republicans to use later "Obama raised our debt!").

And in one year, the republicans will again hold the unemployed over the pool of rabid sharks with lasers on their heads, laughing and demanding something else for their corporate buddies, and the president will cave again. And they'll do it again in 2 years when the tax cuts are again set to expire.

Obama will keep caving and giving Americans only 1/4 (or less) of the change he promised because he continues to struggle in the system instead of changing the broke-ass system, so he can actually get some real work done.

Very amusing that no one is saying that the tax cuts remaining for the wealthy, was a key to the unemployment extension, because ultimately the wealthy will receive the funds from the unemployed.

So Obama said okay we will not only give you your tax breaks, in the end you will receive the monies from the extended unemployment benefits. That money will be used to pay for; rents, utilities, groceries, fuel for vehicles, ... I'm all for helping the unemployed, how about we get them work so they are not unemployed. If they are working the GOP has no leverage for tax breaks for the wealthy based upon the need of the unfortunates.

We need work not handouts !!!!!!

Yes we need both right now. But one will eliminate the other, without the work the other will continue to grow. I've always been for giving some one a helping hand when it is needed, but I've always been against carrying someone elses load just because they don't want to carry it.

Good people are suffering, it is hell to be without work when ya want to work. I've been there before. Those who are working are suffering as well, we are doing the work that used to be done by more workers.

The owners are making more and paying less, so they are rewarded with continued tax breaks, and less incentive to hire American workers.

          There is no easy answer.

Have faith in the man. Obama was outgunned in a lame duck session with the prospect of the house and senate getting more republicans in a few weeks. He needed to help the American public and the Republicans were using us as hostages. President Obama just took a bullet for us.

How was Obama out gunned? He still has a majority in the House and a good portion in the Senate. Not much has changed. The new Congress is not seated yet. Obama has been having a hard item keeping the Democrats with the Democrats because the policies they are pushing are just that bad. Extending tax cuts to the rich for another two years is not a bad deal at all considering that unemployment will be extended of another 13 months. That's not counting all of the other items that Obama got on this compromise. If it remains the same we added more money to the deficit by just covering Obama's wish list.

I think the game plan is to get Americans to leave the country to find jobs. The GOP just dumped gas on a smoldering country, nothing short of blackmail. The Wealthy have spoken, so kiss educational funding, and jobs that would rebuild this country good bye. The bright side. The Chinese built the first railroad systems in this country, they will do it again, only this time they'll own them.

The unemployment extentions can help the economy cause those who get it will spend every damn dime while the tax breaks to the rich, well, we have seen them hoard that for the last 10 years. I don't see things changing anytime soon. WE needed to see those corporations that have those jobs outsourced, pay more either nin taxes or tariffs. Those who CREATE jobs or bring them here should GET tax breaks. Easy to say, hard to do especially with a economic terrorist led House come the end of NEXT month!

devilsadvocates - thanks for staying on topic :) - I've heard the argument the unemployment extensions will stimulate more than the cost because it's ground level. To me - honestly - this is just as flawed as saying tax cuts generate more tax revenue. The fact is - taxpayers have to pay out the unemployment benefits either now or in future generations that pay back for the borrowing we did for it. It will definitely positively cost more in taxes than the revenue it generates back. If that wasn't true we should just pass out checks to everyone making under 50K all the time and pile up that extra money we get from all the magic spending.

As an aside I agree totally that tax breaks should go to the productive - someone working or actively managing an enterprise. No one in this life will ever persuade me we should give dividend tax cuts, free state bond interest and capital gains tax cuts to people that essentially sit on their ass and do nothing, but someone working or running a business should pay through the nose. "Capital" isn't worth anywhere near that much it's way overrated. I want to raise the marginal tax rate to 60%, but give really good business tax incentives so small business can pay even less than they do now.

Most people on unemployment just want a job at a LIVABLE wage. I really do not think that is such a big demand. The powerful rich elite will do everything in their power to make us all economic slaves. Those that can survive. They don't want us to have health care or birth control. The BC will force us to have more kids to feed their supply of slaves and no health care will cause those who are in ill health to die. A reTHUGliCON and elite DREAM while a little guy's nightmare!

OK good points but once again off-topic and that's partly my fault.

devilsadvocates how do we turn this around? It would help if the Democrats actually fought for the middle class like they're supposed to do and stop whining about the party of No and they're voting against their own interest and all the other BS. The Republicans have all the right in the world to advocate and fight for their positions, but they should get called on it.

And back to topic - the deficit. Once again how do we extend unemployment benefits and let the rich keep their tax cut and not add anything to the deficit? Right now I'd settle for the good drugs that seem to make this magic possible.

Yuh - you still only owe 20 dollars because it's only for 2 years.

I'm willing to go big - if I still owe only 20 dollars let me borrow a million.

What will your unborn grandkids be pissed about? Gee they're only going to owe 20 dollars too.

The article states that it does not worsen medium and long term deficits since it is designed to be temporary for two years.

The tax cuts were designed to be temporary when they were first written up, for good reasons (they didn't work), adding 2 more years is just adding 2 more years of lost revenue, leaving the government to cut back more on things we need like education (because they sure as hell won't cut back on things like defense, all that contractor money has to get to haliburton and blackwater or whatever they are calling themselves now).

Originally the Bush Tax cuts were only going to last 10 years, they are well on their way to being permanent.

I'd take a 10-1 bet the cuts will become permanent.

I'm figuring the only chance the cuts will go away for those making >250K is if Obama loses the primary and that person wins. If Obama stays or the Republican wins, a snowball in the middle of the sun has a better chance than not making the tax cuts permanent.

Obama stated he couldnt pass the middle class tax cuts because he didnt have the votes in the Senate. This is very true! Due to the likes of turncoats Feingold, Leiberman , Durbin, Rockefeller, and Harkin! What the hell is their problem? These guys are the reason the President had to make a lousy deal! The guys should be castigated , not the President!!

The difficult presidenecy was brought on by the Obama administration and the Democrats. Remember when he got into office they, Obama and the Democrats, could have done just about anything they wanted, they had the votes. They decided that health insurance and financial reform was more important than a good jobs market. They made the decision to work on everything else but jobs and no one else. Creating a good job market is hard but if it wasn't hard anybody could do it. I think that's why people voted for Obama because he had a plan. The first plan was to re-create a new health care industry and improve the economy in one shot. That didn't work out to well for the American People or the country.

So here we are today keeping taxes at the same level, people know what their tax rates will be and so will all the businesses in the country. Now they can plan their futures because they know where they stand in the tax rates. I hope that the Congress and this President can come up with something for the people that have already exhausted their unemployment benefits but 99 weeks is a long time being out of work. We really need to do something different. Maybe that's something that can be created, debated and made into law for the New Year. We really need to do something different and that's why we hired those that rule Washington. Time to help the people let the businesses fail if they have to. No more bail-out crap it cost us too much money and too much heart break.

A couple of the items you listed helps some of the American Workers. You forgot to mention the Union jobs that were bought with Tax Payer money. The majority stock holder of GMC is now the UAW. Amazing. This country has a firm belief that we have to save every Union job in the country. They even robbed the Food Stamp Program for a teachers retirement plan. To average American, any Non-Union worker, we will have to stand at the back of the line the immigrants get to go before us. After looking at your list many did get a lot of help before the Average American Worker. After all without the American Worker working the economy does come to a screeching halt. Just like it is today.

When companies compare wages and benefits, of their own employees, to the the greater industry, the law of averages holds wages and benefits higher because of unions. It's how they keep emplyees from jumping ship. Few anti union talking points will admit this statistical reality.

K man, keep laying it out there bro, when will the American people wake up and realize that clinging to either party is a mistake? They "the parties" set the reality, the debate, and deluge the average dumming down of America citizen with BS ideology spurts via the robotic media just so the pseudo fight goes on. It a tactic that enables them to take more and more from our core and shove it out our economic back door.

I expect a massive shake up.....this may not even pass....which would be a statement about the strength of Democratic party...and it's supporters.......

Democrats anger slow ...but once they reach fever pitch it is heard around the world....and I expect this to seperate the men from the boys....and rattlle the timbers.....Watch those grins get wiped off of the faces of the slime .........this whole thing will destroy the Republicans in the long run......

I am sorry. I have been reading many of the posts here and on other threads and it is only those with far left leanings that are in an uproar. The broad middle is pretty satisfied with this and understands that compromise is the way things work.

Your comment is resounding and completely true. This is not what the President wanted but he had to make a decision for the American people that need help. I want you to recall in 2012 that John Boehner and the Republicans decided to use us as pawns. They were willing to sell us all out unless their rich corporate sponsors got Billions in tax Breaks.

President Obama has been kicked around too much. It sucks when we are faced with damned if you don't and double damned if you do situations. A decision had to be made, he made the decision to help the people. Exactly as he has been doing from day 1. I trust his judgment and decisions.

I feel pretty happy about having the white house seal on my article. I am proud of our President.

Actually I did not see the Olbermann commentary to be a slam on the president. Ezra Klein put the plan in plain English. Here is one of Ezra's comments:

i think it's important to clear up the 900 billion we mentioned. only 130 billion are tax cuts for the rich. the bulk of it is the tax cuts obama wanted to extend. the tax cuts for those making under 250. that's a good progressive tax cut. the bulk is not trickle-down economics. the bulk are things most people agree. now the tax cuts for the rich, that is not a good way to spend $130 billion. it's not very stimulative. it doesn't appear to be great for the economy. it's not good from an equity standpoint. but it is what the cost of all the other stuff. it's the cost of the rest of the stimulus.

Lets take it up another notch KS, they can freeze government employee wages but can't find the wherewithal to shut off the subsidies to the illegals and "so called" disadvantaged minorities. Now thats really smart; yet once again the dumming down of America government dependents, and the, I can't think for myself cultish party liners can't call out this injustice. Once again, the unworthy at the top have sold our own people out in favor those from their most favorite nations. Aren't they wonderful, we couldn't ask for any better representation out of them, especially considering the fact that the citizenship of their heart is with a foreign country. People stand up, they're destroying this great nation!
